Designing the ideal learning environment for kids is a challenge that has interested people across many fields. The perfect solution is highly debatable and depends on who you ask. However, we do know for certain that these spaces impact the learning experience and overall well-being of children. So we decided to conduct a mini research of our own. Guided by the 10 commandments of designing for children, we asked 20 preschoolers to design their ideal classroom. This is what they said.
1. Bring outdoor environment indoors
Let the environment outside flow into the classrooms, without any barriers in between. Include plenty of trees and even real animals if possible. Design classrooms with spaces to grow plants bearing fruits like berries or flowers. Have a climbing tree in every room so kids can go up and down all day long.
2. Create a space to relax and wind down
Add plenty of softs things to the learning space to make it comfortable. Having couches to take a nap on and relax during a hard day of learning and play would be amazing!
3. Integrate technology
Bring modern day technology into the classroom. Set up a charging corner with tablets that kids can access freely to learn and play with.

4. Include more colors
Design classrooms that have a lot of vibrant colors. A great way to do this, is to purchase essential furniture like chairs and tables in different colors. Instead of being an accessory or overemphasized on a feature wall, color will seamlessly integrate with the learning environment.
5. Use the ceiling for storage
Double up the function of the ceiling to hang coats, umbrellas, hats, etc. Then without using the classroom floor and walls to stack things, we can use the ceiling. This way we can design classrooms with more space to learn and play.
6. Make the classroom yard a fun learning fiesta
The space outside the classroom is just as important as the classroom itself. It would be amazing to have a jungle gym where kids could climb, crawl, slide down and swing from. A swimming pool to splash around in and an outdoor stage to perform on is an added bonus. Most importantly, there must be a space to have grill parties all year long!
